So, when Mel at Barefoot Books offered to send me some books to review with Little Berry, I was thrilled. Their selection of books is amazing, and their company is all about celebrating, exploring, and learning about different cultures, the planet, and oneself. It encompasses so much of what makes our family special, and that alone makes the company amazing. Basically, it's a beautiful shop full of all the wonderful books I've been hunting for!

All of the ink used by their printers is vegetable-based. Their printers do not use paper that contains pulp from illegal or unsustainable sources in the manufacturing of their books.
Their print suppliers have systems in place to feed paper offcuts and wastage back into their supply chain.
Their packaging is made from recycled material and recycled again after use.
The books Mel sent us were two super fun
books suited just right for Little Berry's age range an interests. We received
a copy of Mama Panya's Pancakes, a book about Mama and her son Adika, and their village
in Kenya. It was a fun, fast-paced, and interesting story
about resourcefulness and community, and a silly, clever, and very thoughtful boy.

Little Berry wanted to share this book with her Nana& Auntie, so she and Pappa used face-time to call them and read it together. Listening to them read this story across hundreds of miles of distance, a story about family and friends celebrating together and enjoying their favorite food (a kind of pancake that you can make by following the included recipe) reminded me of thanksgiving and the meals we share with our loved ones over the winter holidays especially, and how important those rituals are to children and families. I also was reminded of how very neat it is that we are making our own rituals that span the distance of space through things like sharing a story via Skype.
The second book Mel sent us was a book called The Boy Who Grew Flowers, and it is a heartwarming celebration about being different. This book was an important read for Little Berry, and I enjoyed sharing it with her. In this imaginative, silly story, a young boy named Rink, who grows flowers out of his body during the full moon, meets a girl who has one leg shorter than the other. Each of them are different than the other children in their neighborhood and school, but neither compromises what makes them unique in order to be "in," and instead both embrace it& celebrate their differences together. It's a message I am happy to share with my daughter and make sure she knows: you are special just the way you are.
