I really like rainbows. You probably knew that already, but you might not have known that I like knitting too; especially knitting with Little Berry (who likes rainbows as much as I do!). So you can imagine how excited I was when I saw this beautiful, vibrant Rainbow Yarn from Kimberly of Kimberly R Designs & KR Dyeworks on Etsy. Kimberly makes gorgeous, magical, sophisticated and colorful yarns, such as this lovely Affection Neutral Rose yarn that just beg to be knitted into something cozy and snuggly. Her yarns stand out in a crowd (in a good way!) and she hand dyes her yarns in small batches to make sure their colors are bold and consistent. The yarn we received was rainbow gradient yarn in beautiful, bright colors. It is soft, pretty, and knitted up smoothly.  
                                   

*** Knitting with children is a really fun way to show them the value of making things for and by yourself, and I especially enjoy teaching Little Berry to make things as gifts to give to those we love around the holidays. When I asked Little Berry what she thought of the rainbow yarn, she asked if we could unravel it all right then. And usually I would have said ‘no,’ but I had some time on my hands and figured, ‘why not?’ 
Besides, I really wanted to sit& play with it too!
So Little Berry pulled the yarn string until it was all undone, while I sat beside her and rerolled it, marveling at how soft it is, wondering what we would make, LOVING the vibrant colors. Listening to Little Berry guess which color was coming next was also interesting. We talked a bit about rainbows and how they always appear in the same order& why. Then I asked Little Berry what she would like to make out of it, and she said:
"I want to make a scarf for my friend Luz, of course."

*** After we sat& looked at scarves in a knitting book for grown ups, I pulled out my circular knitting needles (I prefer to use them when knitting with children because then their work won’t fall off the back end of the needles). We used a pair of bamboo size 11 needles, which were just perfect for little hands. Little berry was instantly fascinated and eager to help. It was fun to explain how yarn is made, and watch her examining the fibers of Kimberly's yarn became a lesson about sheep!

I think it’s important to actually allow children to participate when you can, and I let Little Berry help knit this from start to finish. Much of the time this meant she moved the yarn around the needle while I held the needles, or unrolled the ball of yarn as we went, but equally as often she took up the needles herself and stitched.
I was surprised at how much yarn there was! Kimberly is more than generous with her skeins and the quality rivals every yarn I have ever owned. There was at least enough to make two large scarves or even a small blanket. 

However, toddlers stitch much more slowly than grown ups, so don’t be frustrated about the pace of the project, and if you want to make something as a gift, be sure to start in advance of the holiday. We didn’t get to make any fancy patterns or stitches in our scarf, which is a shame because the yarn is so fun, but I wanted to let Little Berry get the feel of working the needles so we didn’t worry so much about perfection, or missed stitches, or making it fancy.

But what we made, oh she is so proud of it. It might not look like much to you, but she is thrilled and so happy that it’s rainbowy-I think she was confused how it would make stripes when we started but eventually began understanding that as well.
I sewed on a bit of elastic when we finished, and she chose a button we made together for a closure. It turned out to be a very cheerful and super sweet little cowl/scarf for her friend. 

If you’ve never knitted, or never knitted with children, there are options besides knitting with knitting needles if that intimidates you. You can learn to finger knit, which is loads of fun, or make a knitting loom together and learn to knit on one of these. No matter what you do, you're sure to have a BLAST with your children making a thoughtful, snuggly-warm gift by hand for their grandma, or their teacher, or even you, or for themselves! And no matter what they make, it will surely be treasured for a long time to come. It is a wonderful experience to share with your children and Kimberly has the best, brightest, and softest selections of yarn to get you started.
